2006 Ford Transit MAP Sensor: What it does, where it lives, and how to look after it

Based on technical references including the Ford Workshop Manual for Transit (2006, Section 303-14), Autodata service information, and Bosch EDC16 engine management documentation used on the Duratorq TDCi diesels, the 2006 Ford Transit is fitted with a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor—often also called a boost pressure sensor. It’s a key input for fuelling, EGR, and turbo boost control.

The MAP sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold (or charge pipe on some variants). The engine control module compares this pressure against ambient and target boost to work out how much air is getting in, then meters fuel to match. When it’s reading cleanly, the van pulls hard, burns fuel efficiently, and keeps emissions in check.

On most 2.2 and 2.4 TDCi Transits of this year, the sensor is mounted on the inlet manifold or the intercooler outlet pipe. Over time, EGR soot and oil mist can gum up the sensing port, skewing readings. The tell-tales include sluggish performance, black smoke, rough idle, limp-home mode, or codes such as P0106–P0108 and P0236–P0238.

As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to:

  • Inspect the MAP sensor and connector every 20,000 km for oil/soot buildup, green crust on pins, or chafed wiring.
  • Clean the sensor tip using electronics-safe MAP/MAF cleaner—never brake or carb cleaner—and allow it to dry fully.
  • Check any attached O-ring for nicks or flattening, replace if it doesn’t seal snugly.
  • If remote-hosed types are fitted, make sure the hose isn’t split or blocked.

Replacement is straightforward: disconnect the plug, undo the small fasteners, swap the unit and O-ring, then reconnect. Only nip the bolts to the workshop spec—over-tightening can crack the housing. Use a quality OE-equivalent sensor (common OE suppliers include Bosch and VDO). After fitting, clear fault codes and, if available on the scan tool, run an idle relearn or KAM reset so the ECU adopts clean baseline values.

Keeping the MAP sensor clean and healthy helps the Transit stay perky on boost, saves a few bucks on diesel, and reduces soot load in the intake—good news for long-haul reliability around Australia and New Zealand.
