On petrol models, the knock sensor’s job is to “listen” for detonation (that metallic ping under load) and let the PCM trim ignition timing to protect the engine. That means smoother running on hot days, towing under the Kiwi sun, or cruising Aussie highways on 91–95 RON fuel. When the sensor is happy, timing can be advanced for decent power and economy, if it hears knock, timing is gently pulled back to keep the motor safe.
