Parts for your 2005 Nissan Primera-Cluth slave cylinder

2005 Nissan Primera cluth-slave-cylinder: what it is, how it fails, and when to replace it

Based on technical sources — Nissan Primera P12 Service Manual (Section CL: Clutch), the Haynes workshop manual for Primera (2002–2008), and Autodata service specifications — the 2005 Nissan Primera with a manual gearbox uses a hydraulic clutch with a cluth-slave-cylinder, most often a concentric type mounted inside the bellhousing. Automatic transmissions don’t use a cluth-slave-cylinder.

On a 2005 Primera manual, the cluth-slave-cylinder (clutch slave cylinder) converts pedal effort into hydraulic movement that releases the clutch. Press the pedal, the master cylinder sends brake fluid to the slave, and the slave moves the release mechanism to disengage the friction plate. In many P12 variants this is a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) that doubles as the release bearing and sits around the gearbox input shaft. Because the CSC lives inside the bellhousing, any leak often shows as fluid weeping from the bellhousing area and usually means the gearbox has to come out to sort it.

Tell-tale signs of a tired cluth-slave-cylinder include:

  • Spongy or sinking clutch pedal, hard shifts, or gears that graunch.
  • Fluid loss or dampness at the bellhousing, and a low clutch/brake reservoir.
  • Clutch slipping to disengage fully at a stop or biting right off the floor.

Servicing is straightforward in principle. The fluid is ordinary brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4 as specified), so it should be flushed every 2 years or around 40,000 km to keep moisture and corrosion at bay. If the cluth-slave-cylinder is external (on some engines), it can often be replaced without removing the gearbox. Where a concentric unit is fitted, best practice is to replace it whenever the clutch kit is done — it saves doubling up on labour later. Refill with fresh fluid, bleed carefully (pressure or vacuum bleeding helps), and check the master cylinder and hose for age-related issues while there.

A quality OEM-equivalent cylinder and a proper bleed will usually give years of drama-free driving. If brake fluid is visible at the bellhousing, topping up is only a short-term band-aid — brake fluid can strip paint and a failure can happen suddenly, so it’s safer to organise repair rather than keep driving and hoping for the best.

Popular questions about 2005-nissan-primera cluth-slave-cylinder

Does every 2005 Nissan Primera have a cluth-slave-cylinder?
Manual models do. Technical guides (Nissan P12 Service Manual CL section, Haynes, and Autodata) note a hydraulic clutch with a slave cylinder, commonly the concentric type inside the bellhousing. Automatic transmissions don’t have a clutch or cluth-slave-cylinder.

How often should the cluth-slave-cylinder be replaced?
There’s no fixed kilometre interval. It’s replaced when leaking, binding, or whenever the clutch is being renewed if it’s a concentric unit. The fluid should be flushed every 2 years to prolong the life of the master and slave.

Is it safe to drive with a leaking cluth-slave-cylinder?
Not ideal. A minor weep can turn into a sudden failure, leaving the clutch inoperative. If fluid is dropping and shifts are getting tricky, arranging repair or a tow is the smart move.
