2004 Holden Commodore driveshafts — what they do and how to look after them

Factory U-joints are typically sealed-for-life, if they’re rough or loose, replacement is the go. When removing the tailshaft, mark the flanges so it goes back in the same orientation to maintain balance. Use correct torque on flange bolts, and replace any single-use hardware if specified in the service info. If the tailshaft has a dent or the slip joint is excessively worn, a specialist driveline shop can often rebuild and balance it, otherwise, a quality exchange unit is a reliable fix. For IRS half-shafts, replace any torn boots promptly to avoid CV contamination, once a joint is noisy or notchy, replacement is usually more economical than a repair.
