On these engines the engine control unit commands the EGR via a vacuum solenoid, and many variants also have an EGR cooler. Some petrol Transits may differ by market calibration, but for 2004 diesel models sold in Australia and New Zealand, an EGR valve is standard equipment.
What does the EGR do? It routes a measured amount of exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and cut oxides of nitrogen (NOx). That helps the Transit meet emissions rules without wrecking drivability. When it’s working right, you’ll hardly notice it.

Cleaning involves removing the valve and clearing carbon from the pintle and housing, plus de-coking the EGR throat and connected pipework. Always fit a new gasket on refit, check the vacuum hoses for cracks, and ensure electrical connectors are clean and snug. After replacement or a deep clean, clear fault codes and run an EGR functional test with a capable scan tool, some calibrations benefit from an adaptation reset.
Replacement is straightforward for a competent home spanner user, but mind hot components and cramped access. Use quality parts, follow the workshop manual for torque settings, and don’t overtighten into alloy. Avoid “blanking” or deleting the EGR—tampering with emissions gear is illegal in Australia and New Zealand and can land the vehicle with defects, fines, and insurance grief. Keeping the system clean, running good diesel, and giving the Transit a proper highway run now and then will keep the EGR happy for the long haul.
