2004 Ford Ranger crank-angle sensor: what it does, where it is, and how to look after it
Referencing the Ford Workshop Manual for the 2004 Ranger, Motorcraft service information, and common repair databases (Alldata/Mitchell), this model does use a crank-angle sensor — Ford calls it the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. It’s functionally the same thing: a sensor that reads crank angle and speed so the engine computer knows exactly when to fire spark and inject fuel.
On a 2004 Ford Ranger, the CKP is critical. The powertrain control module (PCM) uses its signal to sync ignition timing and fuel delivery, monitor engine speed, and manage diagnostics like misfire detection. If the signal drops out, you’ll often get a no-start, random stalling, rough running, or fault codes such as P0335–P0339. The sensor “reads” a toothed wheel (tone ring) on the crank. Depending on engine: the 2.3L Duratec typically mounts the sensor at the rear of the block near the bellhousing, the 3.0L Vulcan and 4.0L SOHC usually have it at the front by the harmonic balancer.
It’s not a routine replacement item, but it’s smart to check it during servicing. Keep the connector clean and dry, ensure the harness is clipped away from the belt and exhaust, and look for oil leaks that can soften the sensor’s O-ring. Any chafed wiring near the crank pulley or A/C compressor area is worth fixing before it strands the ute.
When replacement is needed, it’s a straightforward job with basic tools:
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and allow the engine to cool.
- Access the sensor (front of engine for most V6s, bellhousing area for 2.3L). Unplug the connector, undo the small retaining bolt, and gently twist the sensor out so the O-ring doesn’t tear.
- Lightly oil the new O-ring, seat the sensor squarely, and refit the bolt. Typical M6 bolt torque is in the 8–10 Nm range — check the workshop manual for your exact engine.
- Route the harness exactly as per factory to avoid rubbing. Clear any stored faults, then start and road test.
Most 2004 Rangers will relearn the signal on the fly, if you’ve got a capable scan tool, running a CKP relearn procedure after installation won’t hurt. Stick with quality (Motorcraft/OE-spec) sensors — cheap copies can cause intermittent cut-outs that are maddening to chase.
