2003 Toyota Caldina fuel pump — purpose, servicing and replacement

Based on Toyota technical references, the 2003 Toyota Caldina most definitely uses a fuel pump. Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) lists a “fuel suction with pump assembly” for the T24# series (ZZT241 1ZZ‑FE, AZT241/246 1AZ‑FSE D‑4, and ST246 3S‑GTE). Toyota New Car Features documents for the 1AZ‑FSE also describe an in‑tank electric low‑pressure pump feeding a cam‑driven high‑pressure pump on the engine. Factory repair manuals for the 1ZZ‑FE and 3S‑GTE similarly specify an in‑tank electric pump supplying the injectors under all operating conditions.

On this Caldina, the fuel pump’s job is to move petrol from the tank at the right pressure and volume so the engine runs cleanly and crisply. The in‑tank electric pump keeps things quiet and cool, while a built‑in strainer screens debris. Turbocharged ST246 models demand higher flow under boost, and the D‑4 direct‑injection setup relies on the in‑tank pump to keep the engine’s high‑pressure pump properly supplied.

As part of routine servicing, the pump isn’t a scheduled replacement item, but a few habits go a long way:

  • Keep at least a quarter‑tank of fuel to help cool the pump and avoid picking up sediment.
  • Replace the external fuel filter if your variant is fitted
