For the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser (100 Series), the petrol V8 model (UZJ100 with the 2UZ‑FE) is fitted with camshaft position sensors—one on each cylinder bank. On a 2002 Land Cruiser running the 2UZ‑FE, the camshaft sensor’s job is to tell the engine control module exactly which stroke each cylinder is on. That precise “cylinder ID” lets the ECM fire the injectors and coils at the right moment, especially during start-up and when the engine’s just off idle. Without a clean signal, the V8 can crank longer, stumble, or drop into a limp mode while the ECM guesses from the crank sensor alone.
The sensors live at the front of each cylinder head near the timing belt area. They’re sealed, solid-state units, so there’s no regular service interval—think of them as inspect-not-service. - Unplug the connector, remove the small retaining bolt, and twist the sensor gently to free the O‑ring.
- Lightly oil the new O‑ring, seat the sensor squarely, and tighten the bolt to the specified light torque (small fastener—check the Toyota manual, around 9–10 N·m is typical).
Go OEM (Denso/Toyota) if you can, cheaper copies can throw intermittent faults when hot. After fitting, clear any stored codes and take it for a drive to confirm no return of a cam-related DTC (often seen as P0340/P0345). A good time to replace ageing sensors pre-emptively is when you’re already in there for a timing belt and water pump at around the 150,000 km mark—access is easier and it’s one less thing to worry about on a big trip.
Watch for tell-tales like hard starting, random misfires, surging at low speeds, or the check engine light. If those crop up, a quick scan and a look at live data for cam sync will usually point you in the right direction.
