2002 Holden Astra thrust bearing — what’s fitted and how to look after it
Based on GM TIS2000/GlobalTIS service information for the Astra-G (TS), the Haynes Vauxhall/Opel Astra 1998–2004 workshop manual, and clutch system data from OE suppliers (LuK/Schaeffler and Sachs), the 2002 Holden Astra with a manual gearbox is fitted with a hydraulic concentric slave cylinder that incorporates the clutch thrust (release) bearing. Automatic variants don’t use a clutch thrust bearing. Separately, all Astra engines of this era (e.g., Z18XE) have crankshaft thrust bearings within the main bearings, but these aren’t routine service items.
On manual 2002 Astras, the thrust bearing’s job is to transfer pedal force axially to the pressure plate, cleanly disengaging the clutch so gears can be selected without graunching. Because it’s built into the concentric slave cylinder (CSC) and lives inside the bellhousing, it runs directly on the clutch diaphragm spring. That compact setup improves pedal feel and reduces linkage wear, but it also means the bearing and slave are replaced as one assembly.
For servicing, best practice is to renew the CSC/thrust bearing whenever the clutch is out. The gearbox has to come off to access it, so it’s smart money to fit a complete clutch kit and inspect the flywheel at the same time. Holden/Opel procedures call for correct torque of bellhousing and driveshaft fasteners, careful alignment during refit, and a proper hydraulic bleed with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid (the clutch feed shares the brake fluid reservoir on this model).
- Typical wear signs: a whirring or growl with the clutch pedal pressed, notchy pedal feel, or fluid weeping from the bellhousing.
- Replacement tips: never reuse a removed CSC, avoid compressing its bearing face off-axis, and check the master cylinder and line for seepage.
- Preventative care: keep the brake/clutch fluid at the correct level, change fluid on schedule, and act early on any noise under pedal load.
Quality matters here. OE-equivalent CSCs from LuK or Sachs generally match the factory spec noted in the above manuals and bulletins. With correct installation and clean hydraulics, a new thrust bearing should go the distance for many years and kilometres of everyday Aussie and Kiwi commuting.
Popular questions about 2002 Holden Astra thrust bearings
Does every 2002 Astra have a clutch thrust bearing?
Manual TS Astras do, as part of the concentric slave cylinder. Automatics use a torque converter, so there’s no clutch thrust bearing. Regardless of transmission, the engine itself has internal crankshaft thrust bearings that aren’t normally serviced unless the engine is rebuilt.
What are the common symptoms of a failing thrust bearing on this model?
A rumble, chirp, or growl that appears when the clutch pedal is pressed is classic. A heavy or notchy pedal, difficulty selecting gears at a standstill, or hydraulic fluid on the bellhousing are also red flags. Addressing these early usually prevents collateral damage to the pressure plate and clutch disc.
Should the thrust bearing be replaced without doing the clutch?
It can be, but it’s rarely sensible. Because the gearbox must be removed to access the CSC, most technicians replace the clutch kit and inspect or machine the flywheel at the same time. That approach saves on duplicated labour and reduces the chance of a second teardown soon after.
