2002 Ford Fiesta clutch slave cylinder — fitted and what to know

Technical references from Ford’s Workshop Manual (TIS/ETIS, Section 308-00 Clutch) and the Haynes Ford Fiesta 2002–2008 service manual state the 2002 Fiesta (Mk6, new-shape launched in 2002) uses a hydraulic clutch with a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) inside the gearbox bellhousing. Earlier Fiesta models up to 2002 (Mk4/Mk5) used a cable-operated clutch with no slave cylinder. So for a 2002 Fiesta built on the Mk6 platform, a clutch slave cylinder is absolutely part of the system.

On the 2002 Ford Fiesta, the clutch slave cylinder does the heavy lifting every time the driver presses the pedal. It converts hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder into movement at the release bearing, disengaging the clutch so gears can be selected smoothly. Because it’s a concentric type, the slave cylinder and release bearing are combined in one unit and live inside the bellhousing. That design saves space and gives a nice, consistent pedal feel, but it does mean replacement is a gearbox-out job.

When servicing, it’s smart to think of the CSC as part of the clutch “kit”. If the gearbox is coming out for a clutch, most techs in Australia and New Zealand recommend replacing the CSC at the same time. It reduces the risk of doing the job twice and helps keep the pedal feel spot-on. Use quality DOT 4 fluid, and don’t let the shared brake/clutch reservoir run low during bleeding.

  • Common signs it’s on the way out: spongy or sinking pedal, difficulty selecting gears, fluid traces at the bellhousing join, or clutch slip after a long pedal hold at the lights.
  • Bleeding: pressure bleeding is preferred to purge air fully from the hydraulic line and CSC.
  • Preventative tip: at any clutch replacement, renew the CSC, inspect the master cylinder and pipework, and flush the system.
  1. Confirm your Fiesta is the 2002-on Mk6 (VIN/build date), this model uses the CSC.
  2. If the clutch is due, plan a CSC, clutch kit (cover, plate), and guide tube/seals together.
  3. After reassembly, carry out a careful bleed and a short road test to check engagement point and pedal feel.

Is every 2002 Fiesta hydraulic?
Most 2002 “new-shape” Mk6 cars are, but very late Mk5/early-build crossovers may be cable. A quick VIN check or a look at the reservoir take-off and external pipework will confirm it.

How long does a Fiesta CSC last?
There’s no set interval. Many last the life of the first clutch, replacement is best done when the clutch is out, or earlier if leaks or pedal issues show up.

Can the CSC be replaced without a new clutch?
Yes, but since the gearbox has to come out, most workshops recommend doing both to save labour and avoid repeat work if the clutch is worn.
