2000 Toyota Hilux throttle position sensor (TPS): relevance, purpose and servicing
Based on Toyota service literature for the 1997–2002 Hilux (Engine Control System sections), the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue, the Toyota Wiring Diagram Manual (EWD), and Gregory’s/Max Ellery’s Hilux workshop manuals, a throttle position sensor is fitted to 2000 Hilux models with petrol engines (such as the 3RZ‑FE) and to electronically controlled turbo-diesel variants (1KZ‑TE, often labelled as an accelerator position sensor). Mechanically injected diesels like the 3L and 5L don’t use a TPS because there’s no ECU-managed throttle plate. So, for most Aussie and Kiwi 2000 Hilux utes—especially petrol and 1KZ‑TE—the TPS is definitely relevant.
On 2000 Hilux models that have one, the TPS tells the engine control unit how far the throttle is open, so the ECU can meter fuel, tweak ignition timing, manage idle-up, and on autos, choose cleaner shift points. On petrol 3RZ‑FE models it’s mounted to the throttle body. On 1KZ‑TE EFi diesels, it’s attached to the pump/throttle linkage or intake throttle plate and serves the same “driver’s foot” signal role to the ECU.
When a TPS goes out of whack, the ute can feel doughy off the mark, idle can hunt, fuel use climbs, and auto shifts can turn jerky. The check engine light may store codes like P0120–P0123. There’s no fixed replacement interval, but it’s smart to give it attention during major services every 40–60,000 kilometres.
- Inspection: With a multimeter or scan tool, check the TPS signal for a smooth sweep from closed to wide open. Look for flat spots or jumps. Verify the idle switch (IDL) where applicable.
- Cleaning: Keep the connector clean and dry under the bonnet. If cleaning the throttle body, avoid drowning the sensor with solvent.
- Adjustment: Many Toyota TPS units are slotted. After fitting, align to the specified idle voltage/angle (refer to the correct spec in the service manual) and confirm the idle contact engages. A small screwdriver and a steady hand are key—don’t overtighten the screws.
- Replacement: Choose a quality OE-equivalent sensor. Mark the old sensor’s position before removal to get the new one close on the first go. Clear fault codes and perform an idle learn, then road test.
A well-set TPS helps the Hilux start cleanly, pull smoothly, and shift neatly—worth five extra minutes at service time with a multimeter under the bonnet.
Where is the TPS on a 2000 Hilux?
On petrol 3RZ‑FE models it’s bolted to the throttle body on the intake. On 1KZ‑TE EFi diesels it’s mounted to the pump/throttle linkage or intake throttle plate assembly. Mechanically injected 3L and 5L diesels don’t have one.
Can a dodgy TPS cause rough shifting and bad fuel economy?
Yes. If the ECU gets the wrong throttle angle, it can enrich fueling, delay or harshen auto shifts, and upset idle speed control. Fixing calibration or replacing a worn sensor usually restores smoothness and trims consumption.
Does a 3L or 5L diesel Hilux use a TPS?
No. Those engines are mechanically injected and don’t rely on an ECU-controlled throttle plate, so there’s no TPS to service. Focus instead on cable/linkage condition and general fuel and air system maintenance.
