Yes, the 2000 Toyota Altezza is fitted with a knock sensor. Technical literature backs this up: the Toyota Repair Manual for GXE10/SXE10 (Toyota TIS), the Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD), and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) all list a “Sensor, Knock” for both the 1G‑FE (AS200/IS200-type) and 3S‑GE BEAMS (RS200) engines. On these engines the ECU uses the knock sensor signal to manage ignition timing and safeguard the engine.
What’s the knock sensor’s job? It’s a piezo sensor that listens for knock (detonation) and tells the ECU to pull a bit of timing when the fuel/air mix is misbehaving. That keeps the 3S‑GE lively and the 1G‑FE smooth, while protecting the pistons, rings and bearings. It also helps fuel economy and hot‑day drivability on our Aussie and Kiwi fuels.
If the knock sensor or its wiring goes crook, drivers may notice a Check Engine Light and codes like P0325/P0330, a flat feel under load, rough running, higher fuel use, or audible pinging on hills. The ECU may drop into a conservative timing map to protect the motor, which is safe enough to get home but not ideal to keep driving on.
There’s no scheduled replacement interval, but it’s smart to check the sensor and harness during bigger services. Typical good practice includes:
- Use quality 95–98 RON petrol, RS200 owners generally see best results on 98.
- Inspect the connector and loom for brittleness, oil contamination or chafing under the bonnet.
- If removed, refit with a clean, dry block surface and tighten to the factory torque spec — this is critical for proper sensitivity.
- Stick with OEM or OEM‑equivalent sensors, cheap copies can misread knock.
Replacement basics: disconnect the battery, gain access (on the 3S‑GE it’s typically under the intake manifold on the block, on the 1G‑FE it’s along the block on the intake side), swap the sensor, torque to spec, clear codes, then road‑test. After fitting, run fresh fuel and listen for any pinging under load. If codes reappear, double‑check loom routing and grounds. A healthy knock sensor keeps the Altezza feeling crisp on a hot arvo and protects the engine for the long kilometres ahead.
