2000 Mazda Premacy and the MAP sensor: what’s actually fitted
For the 2000 Mazda Premacy (CP series) sold in Australia and New Zealand—usually the 1.8L FP-DE petrol and some 2.0L petrol variants—a MAP sensor isn’t used. Mazda’s factory documentation lists a hot-film Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor for engine load sensing, with barometric pressure handled by a Barometric Pressure Sensor (BPS) integrated in the PCM/ECU, not a separate manifold pressure sensor. This is shown in the Mazda Premacy (CP) Workshop Manual, Engine Control System sections and wiring diagrams, and is consistent with the shared 323 (BJ) platform manuals for the FP/FS engines, which specify MAF-based control. Mazda’s parts catalogues for CP8W/CP9W petrol models list an “air flow meter” but no MAP sensor, by contrast, the 2.0 DiTD diesel lists a “boost/pressure sensor.”
Why no MAP on the petrol Premacy? Mazda engineered these naturally aspirated petrol engines around a MAF strategy, which directly measures incoming air mass. With MAF plus an internal baro input, the ECU can calculate fuel delivery and timing without a separate manifold absolute pressure sensor. A discrete MAP sensor is more typical on turbocharged applications (for boost measurement) and some speed-density petrol systems.
Owners chasing a “MAP sensor” problem on a petrol Premacy are usually dealing with one of these instead:
- MAF sensor contamination or wiring faults (often behind P0100–P0104 style codes)
- Vacuum leaks causing unstable idle/trim issues
- Barometric/ECU internal reference faults reported by scan tools as generic “MAP/BARO” errors
For the 2.0 DiTD diesel Premacy of the same era, a MAP/boost pressure sensor is fitted and used for boost and EGR control. Depending on market it’s mounted on or near the intake manifold, or remotely on the body with a hose to the manifold. If working on a diesel, verify the exact location via the model-specific wiring diagram or under-bonnet label.
Practical tip for petrol owners: don’t buy a “MAP sensor” on a hunch. If a workshop or scan app mentions MAP on a 2000 Premacy petrol, double-check the engine code, inspect and clean the MAF with proper MAF cleaner, check intake hoses for splits, and confirm grounds and connectors at the MAF and ECU.
