2000 Ford Mondeo MAP sensor — is it actually a thing on this model?
For most 2000 Ford Mondeo models sold in Australia and New Zealand with the 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 Zetec petrol engines, there isn’t a standalone MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor fitted. These petrol cars use a MAF (mass air flow) sensor for engine load calculation, and the barometric pressure input is handled either by a separate BAP sensor or a baro element integrated into the PCM (EEC‑V), so a “MAP sensor” isn’t a service part on those engines.
Where a MAP sensor is relevant is on the turbo-diesel variants. The 1.8 TD (Endura-DE) and the later 2.0 TDDi (arriving around late 2000 in some markets) use a boost/MAP sensor to report intake manifold pressure to the ECU. If the vehicle is a diesel, there will be a MAP/boost sensor, if it’s a naturally aspirated petrol Zetec, there won’t be.
Why the difference? On the Zetec petrol engines, Ford’s EEC‑V strategy primarily measures incoming air directly with a MAF sensor, then trims fuelling with inputs like throttle position, intake air temperature and barometric pressure. Because the MAF gives an accurate real-time airflow figure, a manifold pressure reading isn’t required for normal operation on these non‑turbo petrol setups. That’s why you won’t find a MAP sensor on the manifold of a 2000 Mondeo petrol, even though you might spot a similar‑looking EGR DPFE sensor or the MAF in the air intake and assume it’s “the MAP”.
