1999 Toyota Caldina throttle-position-sensor (TPS)
The 1999 Toyota Caldina does use a throttle-position-sensor. Toyota’s factory literature for the T210/T215 Caldina—such as the Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) and the engine Repair Manuals for the 5A-FE/7A-FE and 3S-FE/3S-GTE—shows a TPS on the throttle body with the VTA/IDL signal circuits feeding the engine control module. Toyota’s New Car Features (EFI section) for these late-’90s S- and A-series engines also explains the TPS role in fuelling and ignition timing on cable-operated throttles. That makes the TPS fully relevant to every 1999 Caldina petrol variant, including the GT-T (3S-GTE).
On a ’99 Caldina, the TPS is a small sensor bolted to the side of the throttle body. As the driver presses the pedal, the throttle plate moves and the TPS reports that angle to the ECU. The ECU then fine-tunes fuel, spark timing and, on autos, shift behaviour. It also helps with idle stability, decel fuel cut and off-the-line response. Because these cars run a conventional cable throttle (not drive-by-wire), a healthy TPS is a big part of smooth, predictable drivability.
Common clues the TPS is getting grumpy include a hunting idle, flat spots on take-off, random surging, poor fuel economy and a check-engine light. Diagnostic trouble codes often land in the P0120–P0124 range, but even without a scan tool, a multimeter test at the sensor plug (per the Toyota workshop manual) can confirm dead spots.

- Give the throttle body a gentle clean without soaking the TPS in solvent.
- Inspect the TPS connector for green corrosion or loose pins.
- Check the throttle cable for free movement and proper slack.
- Test the TPS output smoothly from closed to wide open—no dropouts or spikes.
Replacement is straightforward: disconnect the battery, unplug the connector, remove the two screws, swap the sensor and refit. On many Caldina engines the TPS is slotted, after installation it should be set to spec using a feeler gauge or voltage method as outlined in the Toyota Repair Manual. Getting that base setting right matters—too far one way and it idles high, too far the other and it stumbles off idle. Once fitted and adjusted, clear any codes and take it for a drive so the ECU trims can settle. Quality parts and a careful setup will keep the old girl running sweet for plenty more kilometres.
- Where is the TPS on a 1999 Caldina?
