1999 Toyota Avensis Shock Absorbers

Shock absorbers are absolutely fitted to the 1999 Toyota Avensis (T22 series). Technical sources including Toyota’s workshop literature for the T22 platform, the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC), and major damper catalogues (KYB, Monroe, Sachs) list MacPherson strut assemblies at the front and damper units at the rear across petrol and diesel variants of this model. Those references confirm the Avensis relies on hydraulic dampers (shocks/struts) to control body motion and keep the tyres planted.

On this Avensis, the shocks do the quiet hard yakka behind the scenes. They’re there to rein in the coil springs, stopping the body from bouncing on rough Kiwi backroads or Aussie highways, and keeping the tyres gripping properly under brakes and through corners. Good dampers sharpen steering feel, shorten stopping distances, and make long trips far less fatiguing.

As part of servicing a 1999 Avensis, it’s smart to check the shocks every 20,000 km or at least once a year, and any time a WOF or safety check is due. Typical lifespan can be 80,000–150,000 km, but chip-seal, corrugations, and heavy loads can shorten that. Look for oil weeping on the strut body, split dust boots, perished bushings or top mounts, uneven tyre wear, nose-diving under brakes, floaty or bouncy ride, and clunks over potholes.

When it’s time to replace, do both sides on the same axle to keep the car balanced. For front MacPherson struts, a wheel alignment is needed afterwards
