1999 Subaru Forester Headlights

Headlights are absolutely relevant and fitted to the 1999 Subaru Forester. The owner’s manual and Subaru factory service manual both cover headlamp operation, bulb types and replacement. They’re also required for road use under Australian Design Rule 13/00 and New Zealand’s Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004, so this Forester leaves the factory with halogen headlights as standard equipment.

On this classic Forester, the headlights do the heavy lifting after dark and in poor weather—making road edges, signs, stray wildlife and other vehicles easier to spot. They also help others see the vehicle coming, especially on rural Kiwi and Aussie roads where visibility can swing with the weather. Low beam keeps glare down for oncoming traffic, while high beam throws light further ahead when the road’s clear.

When it’s time to replace a globe, most 1999 Foresters use a dual‑filament halogen globe (commonly H4/9003/HB2). Always confirm in the owner’s manual or on the lamp housing. Replacement is straightforward from under the bonnet: disconnect the battery negative if preferred for safety, pull off the rubber dust cap at the back of the headlamp, unclip the spring retainer, swap the globe, and refit in reverse. Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers—skin oils can shorten bulb life. Check the headlight fuse and connectors if a new globe doesn’t light up.

Good servicing habits keep visibility crisp and the WoF/reg check easy:

  • Inspect operation and aim every 6 months or before long trips.
  • Clean lenses with a gentle plastic‑safe cleaner
