1999 Nissan Navara centre-bearing: what it does, and when it matters

So for a typical 1999 D22 in Australia or New Zealand, the centre-bearing is relevant if the ute has a two-piece shaft, if it’s a one-piece shaft, there isn’t one to service.
On vehicles fitted with it, the centre-bearing (also called the propeller shaft centre support bearing) sits midway along the two-piece tailshaft. Some D22 setups use shims at the mount, if the bearing has been changed, confirm the bracket height and driveline angles are still on the money to avoid fresh vibrations.
When replacement’s due, mark the tailshaft flanges and the phasing before removal so it all goes back in the same orientation — that keeps the balance right. Separate the two halves, press off the old bearing and carrier, and fit the new assembly with the correct preload and dust shields as required. Refit with threadlocker and torque to spec as per the factory manual. If the centre-bearing has failed because of age or contamination, it’s smart to assess the uni joints and slip yoke while the shaft’s out. Plenty of owners are happy to DIY with a press and some patience, but a driveline shop can balance the shaft and nail the alignment in one hit. That little bit of extra care saves chasing vibrations down the track.
