1999 Mazda Premacy MAP sensor — is it even there?
Short answer: on the Australian and New Zealand–spec 1999 Mazda Premacy (CP series, 1.8L FP-DE petrol), there isn’t a MAP sensor fitted. Mazda used a hot-film Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor as the primary load input on this model, so a manifold absolute pressure sensor isn’t part of the standard petrol setup. This is confirmed by the Mazda Premacy CP Workshop Manual (1999–2001), the Mazda 323 (BJ) Workshop Manual—mechanically related to the Premacy—and Autodata’s ANZ listings, which all show MAF-based engine control without a separate intake manifold pressure sensor. Why no MAP sensor? The engine management strategy on this car calculates engine load from the MAF reading, supported by throttle position, engine speed, coolant temp and intake air temp. Barometric pressure compensation, where specified, is handled by a built-in baro sensor within the ECU rather than a manifold-mounted MAP. Because the system already measures intake airflow directly, a separate MAP sensor isn’t required to run fuel and ignition accurately on the naturally aspirated petrol model.
That’s where the confusion creeps in: some parts catalogues lump all Premacy variants together. Turbo-diesel versions (not common in AU/NZ in 1999) do use a boost/MAP sensor. A few markets also reference a “boost” or “pressure” sensor for EGR diagnostics on other Mazda engines, which isn’t the same thing as a manifold MAP on the 1.8 petrol.
