Parts for your 1998 Nissan Navara-Maf sensor
1998 Nissan Navara MAF Sensor: what it does, whether it’s fitted, and how to look after it
Based on technical references, a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is fitted to many 1998 Nissan Navara variants, but not all. The Nissan D22 Factory Service Manual (EC section for KA24DE petrol) specifies a hot-wire MAF as part of the ECCS engine management. Nissan parts catalogues for D22 likewise list a MAF for KA24DE petrol and the electronically controlled QD32ETi diesel used in some markets. By contrast, the TD27 mechanical-injection diesel used in 1998 D22 models does not employ a MAF, as confirmed by the D22 Diesel Service Manual for TD-series engines, which shows no MAF in its air/intake control—because fuelling is mechanically governed rather than by an ECU. So, the MAF sensor is relevant on 1998 Navaras with KA24DE petrol (and QD32ETi where applicable), but not on TD27 mechanical diesels.
For 1998 Navaras that do run a MAF, this little unit is the ECU’s eyes on incoming air. Sitting in the intake just after the airbox, it measures how much air is heading into the engine so the ECU can trim fuelling for smooth starts, tidy idle, decent power and fair dinkum economy. When a MAF ages or gets dusty, the ute can feel doughy off the mark, drink more fuel, or toss a check-engine light with codes like P0100–P0104.
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to give the MAF some attention every 20–40,000 kilometres, or any time the air filter is swapped. Under the bonnet, unplug the sensor, undo the two screws, and gently remove it from the housing. Only ever use a MAF-safe cleaner—no contact cleaner, no brake cleaner, and don’t touch the sensing element. Let it dry, refit, and make sure the airbox and intake clamps are snug so there are no sneaky leaks. If cleaning doesn’t sort rough running or poor economy, replacement is usually the go, especially if the wiring plug or sensing film looks worse for wear.
Good habits help a lot:
- Keep a quality air filter in it and change on time, especially if it lives on gravel roads or the farm.
- Check for split intake hoses—unmetered air will upset fuelling and idle.
- After replacement, clear fault codes and let the ECU relearn trims with a calm test drive.
For TD27 mechanical diesels, there’s no MAF to worry about, focus instead on clean air filtration, intake integrity, and injector pump health.
Popular questions
Does a 1998 Nissan Navara have a MAF sensor?
It depends on the engine. The KA24DE petrol and many QD32ETi electronic diesels use a MAF. The TD27 mechanical-injection diesel does not. A quick look under the bonnet at the airbox outlet will show a sensor housing with a plug if it has one.
Where is the MAF sensor on a 1998 Navara?
On MAF-equipped models, it’s mounted in the intake duct straight after the airbox lid. Two small screws hold the sensor body to the housing, with a wiring connector on top.
Can the MAF be cleaned or should it be replaced?
Often a careful clean with proper MAF cleaner brings life back, especially if the air filter’s been dusty. If symptoms persist, codes return, or the element is damaged, replacement is the better bet.
