1997 Nissan Navara heater hose — what it does and when to replace it

Heater hose is absolutely fitted and relevant on the 1997 Nissan Navara (D22). Technical references that confirm this include the Nissan Navara D22 Workshop/Service Manual for 1997 (Heating & Air Conditioning “HA” and Cooling System “CO” sections) and Nissan FAST parts catalogue listings for KA24E petrol and TD27/QD32 diesel engines, all of which show inlet and outlet heater hoses running from the engine to the heater core.

On a ’97 Navara, the heater hose carries hot coolant from the engine into the heater core under the dash, and returns it back to the cooling system. That loop gives the cabin its warm air on chilly mornings and helps stabilise engine temperature. Because these hoses live a hard life with heat cycles, vibration, and coolant chemistry, they’re a classic wear item and worth keeping an eye on at service time.

Good practice for a Kiwi or Aussie–driven Navara is to inspect the heater hoses at every service and replace them roughly every 5–7 years or 100,000–150,000 kilometres, sooner if there are signs of ageing. Use quality EPDM hose, fresh clamps, and the correct long-life coolant that meets Nissan specs. Mixing coolants or running straight water can chew through hoses prematurely.

  • Look for swelling, cracks, glazing, oil contamination, or soft spots when squeezed (engine cold only).
  • Check for dried coolant crust near hose ends, a sweet coolant smell in the cabin, or misting on the windscreen — all point to leaks.
  • Replace heater hoses as a pair and fit new clamps
