1997 Nissan Navara crank-angle sensor: what it does and when to replace it
Based on the Nissan Navara/Frontier D22 Factory Service Manual (1997–1999, EC and EM sections) and the Nissan FAST electronic parts catalogue, the 1997 Navara petrol KA24E uses a distributor with an integral optical crank-angle sensor (often called a crank/cam angle sensor in Nissan literature). Electronically controlled diesels such as the QD32ETi also use a dedicated crankshaft position sensor, while the mechanically injected TD27 variants do not rely on a crank-angle sensor. For 1997 Navaras fitted with a sensor, the guidance below applies.
The crank-angle sensor is the ECU’s eyes on the crank. It tells the computer exactly where the crankshaft (and, by association, the pistons) are, and how fast they’re spinning. On KA24E petrol models it lives inside the distributor and feeds the ECU “REF” and “POS” signals to manage spark timing and injector sequencing. On QD32ETi diesels, a separate sensor reads a toothed wheel on the crank to govern injection timing. When it’s healthy, starting is crisp, idle is smooth, and fuel economy is on song. When it’s crook, expect hard starts, random stalling, a dead tacho, or a straight-up no-start with fault codes like P0335/P0340 on a scan tool.
There’s no fixed replacement interval, but it’s smart to inspect the sensor and its wiring during major services (around the 100,000 km mark or when chasing misfires). For KA24E utes, the sensor is built into the distributor—so replacement often means fitting a quality complete distributor rather than gambling on a bargain insert. Mark the distributor’s position before removal, disconnect the battery, swap the unit, and check base timing per the FSM with a proper timing light and the ECU in adjustment mode. For QD32ETi, the sensor is usually mounted at the timing cover or bellhousing, replacement is a straightforward unbolt-and-swap job, but always check air gaps, seal condition and connector fit.
Good habits go a long way: keep oil leaks in check so the sensor window and connector don’t get contaminated, protect the loom where it passes the battery and radiator support, and avoid washing the engine bay with aggressive degreasers. If diagnosing, verify power, earth and signal with a multimeter or scope, wiggle-test the harness, and don’t overlook the distributor cap, rotor and coil on KA24E vehicles—they can mimic sensor faults.

Typical signs are hard starting, random stalls at idle, a dead or jumpy tacho, and codes like P0335 or P0340. If the engine cranks strongly but won’t fire and there’s no spark or injector pulse, the CAS is high on the suspect list. Always check the wiring and distributor internals on KA24E as part of the diagnosis.
Is it safe to keep driving with a dodgy crank-angle sensor?
Not really. A failing sensor can cut out without warning and leave the ute stranded. It can also cause poor running and higher fuel use. If symptoms show up, it’s best to sort it before a long trip—especially in Aussie or Kiwi summer heat, where marginal sensors often give up.
