1992 Suzuki Jimny strut-mounts: what’s actually fitted

For a 1992 Suzuki Jimny (known in Australia and New Zealand largely as the Sierra/Samurai, SJ413), strut-mounts aren’t a thing. The factory setup uses live (rigid) axles front and rear with semi-elliptic leaf springs and separate telescopic shock absorbers, not MacPherson struts. It keeps shocks and springs separate, using spring eyes and shackles (with bushes) to locate the leaf packs, and simple shock absorber mounts with rubber bushes. That’s tough, easy to service on the tracks, and doesn’t rely on a strut tower or strut mount.

So if a squeak, clunk or shimmy crops up, the fix won’t be a “strut-mount replacement”. The relevant checks are the shock absorber bushes and mounts, the condition of the shocks themselves, spring pack integrity and alignment, and the state of spring eye and shackle bushes. Steering components (tie rod ends, drag link, and the steering damper) also play a big role in how the front end feels on road and on corrugations.

• Inspect shock absorbers for leaks, dented bodies, or fading, replace in pairs if weak.

Bottom line: the 1992 Jimny doesn’t have strut-mounts because it doesn’t have struts. Keeping the shocks, bushes, leaf springs and steering bits in good nick will deliver the tight, rugged feel these little 4WDs are loved for.
