1990 Nissan Primera camshaft-sensor: what it does, where it lives, and how to look after it

Based on Nissan’s P10-series factory service manual (EF & EC section) and well-known aftermarket references such as the Haynes Primera 1990–1999 manual and Autodata, the 1990 Nissan Primera uses a camshaft position sensor. It’s an optical sensor integrated inside the distributor and driven by the camshaft. Nissan often calls it a crank angle sensor (CAS) in distributor form, but on these GA16DE/SR20DE petrol engines it provides both engine speed and cam phase information to the ECU—so a camshaft-sensor is absolutely relevant to this model.

On a 1990 Primera, the camshaft-sensor’s job is to tell the ECU exactly where the camshaft (and therefore each cylinder) is in its cycle. It reads a slotted disc inside the distributor, giving the ECU two clean signals: fine resolution for spark timing and a phase signal so it knows which cylinder is on compression. That lets the ECU fire the injectors and spark at the right moment. If that signal drops out, the car can crank forever, misfire, stall, or refuse to start altogether.

Before replacing parts, confirm power, ground, and signal integrity at the distributor. An oscilloscope makes quick work of checking the two output signals, but even a basic multimeter and a code check can narrow it down.

If the sensor or distributor is replaced, mark the distributor position before removal so base ignition timing stays close. After refit, warm the engine and set base timing to the spec for the specific engine using a timing light and the correct ECU/idle setup procedure. Done properly, it’ll run sweet as and start first turn without any dramas.
