How To Jump Start a Car With Jumper Leads

Repco | 10th Dec 2023 | 2 minutes to read

A flat battery is always frustrating and, without a jump starter, you're probably going to need a mate to get going again.

Luckily, jumpstarting your car with jumper leads is a fairly simple process, and really just requires a few steps and a bit of know how to get your battery back up and running.

You will want to note that if the vehicle with a flat battery is being jump started by a vehicle with a smaller engine, the smaller battery may not output enough power to get the larger engine going. If it's the other way around though, you'll have no issues.

Step By Step for Jump Starting Your Car

1

Manoeuvre both cars so that they're nose to nose.

2

Connect the red positive cable to the battery terminal with the + sign on the good car.

Next, connect the black negative cable to the battery terminal with the - sign on the good car.

5

Now connect the black negative cable to clean, unpainted metal on the car with the flat battery. Avoid attaching the cable to the negative terminal as it can cause sparking, which can be dangerous.

6

Start the car with the good battery and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. This will help to avoid the good battery getting drained when starting the other car.

7

Now, start the car with the flat battery and wait until it idles smoothly before carefully disconnecting the jumper leads from both vehicles.
