How To Use a Tow Ball Weight Scale

Repco | 15th Mar 2024 | 2 minutes to read

When towing, the weight on your vehicle's towbar is generated by the trailer or caravan behind you. There are limits set by the vehicle manufacturer as to the maximum weight you can tow and the best way to measure that weight is using a tow ball weight scale.

Exceeding your maximum towing capacity can put unnecessary strain on your car's engine, transmission, and brakes, as well as damaging your tyres and affecting your entire chassis. As these problems build up, you could face catastrophic failure and endanger yourself and others on the road.

A tow ball scale is relatively easy to use and is invaluable in making sure that you're adhering to the safety standards laid out by your manufacturer.

Step by Step Guide To Weighing Your Trailer

1

Find a flat piece of ground and park your vehicle. It's important that the vehicle is on flat ground as you'll need to jack the vehicle up and you want to prevent it from rolling away.

2

Chock your trailer's wheels and use a jack or jockey wheel to disconnect the trailer from the towing vehicle.

Lift the trailer high enough to fit the tow ball scale into the ball coupling. Make sure the scale is as straight up and down as possible.

The scale is marked in 10kg increments and where these markings meet the scale body is your trailer's tow ball weight. Make sure that your trailer weight is below the maximum towing capacity for your vehicle.
