How To Change Your Brake Fluid

Repco | 18th July 2023 | 2 minutes to read

Maintaining your braking system is crucial to safe operation of your vehicle, and consistent brake fluid changes are an important part of this process.

Over time, you're going to get debris building up in your brake fluid, which will reduce its effectiveness, and water absorption can also cause your brakes to fail if left unchecked.

Luckily, this is an easy bit of maintenance, and we've got a quick step-by-step guide to break down the process for you.

Step By Step for Changing Brake Fluid

1

Firstly, make sure you have the correct brake fluid with the correct DOT rating (3, 4, or 5). Check your owner's manual or the cap of your brake master cylinder.

Find your brake master cylinder. It is usually located in the engine bay, on the firewall at the back, right in front of the driver's side.

Use a rag to clean off dirt and grime off the cap so it doesn’t fall into the brake fluid, and to see the fill lines. Gloves are useful here.

When pouring, try not to spill the brake fluid as it can strip and damage painted surfaces.

Don't fill the master cylinder over the fill line and fasten the cap tightly when done.
