How Do I Replace a Lost Car Key?
If you're happy to pay a few hundred dollars, you can contact your car manufacturer or dealership and they will be able to give you a replacement key. However, if you're looking to save some money, you can easily pick up a MAP key replacement and have an automotive locksmith cut a new key for you. Once you've had the key cut, you'll just need to have the key fob programmed to your car and you'll be good to go. While this sounds like a lot of work, it can certainly be worth it considering the massive difference in cost.
What is the difference between a key fob and a car key?
While most people would just call them ‘their car keys' the fob and key are actually two separate things. The fob is the little handheld device that controls your keyless entry system, which is what you lock and unlock using the buttons on the fob's remote. This is separate from the actual key component that you use for the car's ignition —if you have a fully keyless system then your fob will be handling everything!
How Do I Reprogram a Key Fob?
1. Get into the driver's seat with your keys ready.
2. Make sure that all doors are closed, as your doors being open can cause problems while reprogramming the fob
3. Turn the car on, but not to radio mode and do not start the engine.
4. Use the lock button on your fob and then turn the key to the off position. Repeat this three times, leaving the key set to the on position at the end.
Doing this acts as a signal to your car's electronic control unit that this is your key, and it will save that data and remember it. You should hear your car doors unlocking. When you hear this, press the lock button on your key fob and the programming will be complete.
