How do you use an OBD2 scanner?

OBD2 devices are relatively simple to use. Whilst different models carry different functionality, the general process and usage of an OBD2 scanner is quite consistent.

  1. Locate the vehicle’s Data link Connector (DLC) plug
  2. Securely plug the OBD2 cable into the vehicle
  3. Switch the ignition ON
  4. Scroll through and select Diagnostics in the main screen and press the Enter key
  5. A sequence of messages displaying the OBD2 protocols will be observed on the display until the vehicle protocol is detected.
  6. Wait a few seconds to view a summary of the system status
  7. If more than one module is detected, you can select the module, to be tested scroll through and highlight the module and press the Enter key.
  8. Read codes will then be displayed and codes can then be erased.
