How to change your oil filter?
Changing your oil filter requires preparation, the correct tools, and careful attention to safety. Before beginning, gather a compatible replacement oil filter, the recommended grade and quantity of engine oil, an oil filter wrench suited to your filter type, a drain pan, gloves, and clean rags. If access underneath the vehicle is required, use approved safety stands on level ground and ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath it. Allow the engine to cool slightly to reduce the risk of burns from hot oil.
Drain the old engine oil completely before removing the filter. Position the drain pan beneath the filter housing, then loosen the old filter by turning it counterclockwise. Some oil will spill as the seal breaks, which is normal. Confirm that the old rubber gasket has not stuck to the engine mounting surface, as a double gasket can cause leaks. Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil to promote a proper seal. Screw the filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten it according to manufacturer recommendations. Refill the engine with the specified oil, start it briefly, and inspect carefully for leaks around the filter and drain plug.
How often should I change my oil filter?
Oil filters are generally replaced at every oil change interval to maintain clean oil circulation. Service intervals commonly range between 5,000 and 15,000 kilometres, depending on engine design, oil type, and driving conditions. Synthetic oils may allow longer intervals, but the filter should still be changed at the same time to maintain filtration efficiency.
Vehicles driven in heavy traffic, short trip conditions, towing applications, or dusty environments may benefit from more frequent servicing. These conditions place additional stress on engine oil and can lead to faster contaminant build up. Following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule outlined in the owner’s manual helps reduce engine wear, maintain fuel efficiency, and support long term reliability.
Where is my oil filter located?
The oil filter location depends on the vehicle’s engine layout and design. Many vehicles use a spin on filter mounted externally to the engine block, often accessed from underneath the vehicle. In some cases, the filter is positioned within the engine bay for easier access during routine servicing.
Other engines use a cartridge style filter housed inside a reusable casing. This housing may be located on the top or side of the engine and requires removal of a cap to access the internal filter element. Consulting the owner’s manual or service guide will confirm the exact location and filter style fitted to your vehicle before beginning work.
What oil filter fits my car?
Selecting the correct oil filter requires matching the filter to your vehicle’s make, model, engine size, and year of manufacture. Even similar models can use different filters depending on engine variants. The correct filter ensures proper thread engagement, gasket sealing, bypass valve operation, and filtration performance.
Using a parts lookup tool or Rego search system allows you to confirm compatible oil filters quickly and accurately. Choosing a filter that meets or exceeds original equipment specifications helps maintain correct oil pressure, consistent flow, and effective contaminant removal throughout the service interval.
How tight should an oil filter be?
An oil filter should be tightened securely but without excessive force. In most cases, hand tightening until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, followed by an additional three quarters of a turn, provides a reliable seal. Tools are generally not required for final tightening on spin on filters.
Over tightening can crush the gasket, distort the sealing surface, or make future removal difficult. Under tightening may allow oil to leak once the engine reaches operating pressure. After installation and engine start up, visually inspect the filter area to ensure there are no signs of seepage.
Why choose a quality oil filter from Repco?
A quality oil filter plays a critical role in protecting the engine from contaminants such as metal particles, carbon deposits, and sludge. Effective filtration supports stable oil flow and helps maintain consistent lubrication across moving components.
Choosing a filter manufactured to meet recognised standards ensures dependable performance throughout the service interval. Regular oil and filter changes using quality components help reduce internal wear, maintain engine cleanliness, and support reliable day to day operation.
