When relying on your vehicle, you need to ensure all parts are working perfectly and in unison. This is where a vehicle speed sensor is one of those small but critical pieces in the vehicle management system. Measuring transmission/transaxle output or wheel speed, your VSS talks to the ECM which uses this information to modify engine functions such as ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, transmission shift points, and to initiate diagnostic routines.
Wheel speed sensor input is typically also used for vehicle dynamics purposes such as anti-lock brakes, stability control, cruise control systems and traction control among others.
