Is a drive-belt pulley used on the 2024 Toyota Aqua?
For the 2024 Toyota Aqua (second-generation, M15A-FXE hybrid), a conventional accessory drive-belt pulley is not used. Toyota’s technical literature for the M15A-FXE hybrid engine platform (as applied to Aqua/Yaris Hybrid) specifies a beltless accessory layout: the engine uses an electric coolant pump, an electric air-conditioning compressor, and a DC–DC converter in place of a traditional alternator. These elements are documented in Toyota New Car Features and Repair Manual sections for the Yaris/Aqua hybrid powertrain, which explicitly note no auxiliary V-ribbed belt, and in Toyota electronic parts catalog groupings where a serpentine belt, idler, and tensioner are absent while a crankshaft damper/pulley remains only as a torsional damper.
Why no belt? The hybrid system’s Motor-Generator handles charging duties via the inverter and DC–DC converter, the A/C compressor is high-voltage electric, and the engine coolant circulation is driven by an electric pump. Removing the belt and accessory pulleys trims parasitic losses, improves fuel economy, reduces noise under the bonnet, and cuts out routine belt-related maintenance. This is a step on from the first-gen Aqua/Prius c architecture—where the mechanical water pump still used a small belt—toward the fully beltless setups Toyota introduced on later hybrid families.
What does this mean for servicing? There’s no drive-belt pulley to replace or tension, so no belt squeal, glazing, or pulley bearing checks to schedule. Instead, good practice for workshops and owners is to:
- Inspect the crankshaft damper (pulley) for rubber deterioration and wobble, as it serves as a torsional damper rather than a drive sheave.
- Follow the Toyota schedule for engine and inverter coolant inspections and replacement, since both pumps are electric and vital to thermal management.
- Check the electric A/C compressor oil and system health with hybrid-safe A/C procedures.
- Verify DC–DC converter charging performance and 12‑V battery condition during routine services.
