2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross AC compressor — what it does and how to look after it
Per Mitsubishi technical documentation — including the Eclipse Cross Service Manual (HVAC Group) and the Mitsubishi ASA electronic parts catalogue — every 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, including petrol and PHEV variants, is fitted with an air-conditioning compressor. The petrol models use a belt-driven compressor, while the PHEV uses a high-voltage electric compressor as part of its heat-pump HVAC. It’s a core bit of kit, not an optional extra.
The compressor’s job is to pressurise the refrigerant so heat can be shuffled out of the cabin and, on PHEV models, to help manage battery and power electronics temperatures. That’s why a crook compressor shows up as weak cooling, odd rattles or whines, or oily residue around A/C lines and the condenser. Left alone, a failing unit can spread debris through the system and turn a simple repair into a bigger bill.
There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the AC compressor on the 2023 Eclipse Cross, but sensible servicing keeps it happy:
- Run the A/C for 10–15 minutes every couple of weeks (even in winter) to keep seals lubricated.
- Have an annual performance check: outlet temps, pressure readings, condenser condition, and cabin filter replacement.
- Use the correct refrigerant charge by weight (many 2023 models specify R1234yf, confirm on the under-bonnet label).
- Use only the specified compressor oil: PAG for belt-driven petrol models, approved electric-compressor POE oil for PHEV. Never mix oils.
- On petrol models, inspect the drive belt for cracks, glazing, or noise, tension and alignment matter.
- On PHEV, A/C work must be done by high-voltage–trained technicians, the compressor is HV-isolated and uses orange cabling.
If replacement’s on the cards, a proper job means recovering refrigerant, replacing the receiver–drier (often integrated with the condenser), renewing all disturbed O-rings, evacuating to deep vacuum, and charging the exact specified amount. Flushing is generally avoided when an electric compressor is involved. Aftermarket remans can be fine, but quality matters, cheap units can be noisy or short-lived.
In Australia and New Zealand, refrigerant handling is a licensed activity. Always use a workshop with the appropriate A/C and, for PHEV models, high-voltage credentials. With the right care, an Eclipse Cross compressor should comfortably last many years and plenty of road trips.
- What refrigerant does a 2023 Eclipse Cross use?
Most 2023 models specify R1234yf, but always check the under-bonnet label for your exact variant and market. Using the wrong gas or charge amount can hurt performance and the compressor’s lifespan. - How long should the AC compressor last?
Typically 8–12 years, depending on climate, usage, and maintenance. Regular system checks, clean condensers, and correct oil keep it in the sweet spot. - Can any workshop service the PHEV’s compressor?
Best to use a shop with high-voltage training and accreditation. The PHEV’s electric compressor and orange HV circuits require specific safety procedures and oil.
