2022 Toyota Prius Wheel Hubs: Purpose, Care, and When to Replace
Wheel hubs are absolutely used on the 2022 Toyota Prius. Toyota’s Repair Manual (TIS) for the XW50-series Prius (2016–2022, including ZVW50/51/55) lists both “Front Axle Hub Sub-Assembly” and “Rear Axle Hub and Bearing Assembly,” and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue shows these assemblies as standard fitment. Those technical sources confirm the wheel hub is a key part of the Prius drivetrain and suspension package.
On this model, the hub assembly does the heavy lifting: it supports the car’s weight through a sealed bearing, keeps the wheel perfectly centred, and provides the mounting face and studs for the wheel. Up front, the hub also carries the driveshaft spline, transferring torque to the wheel. Both ends incorporate the wheel speed encoder for ABS, traction control, and stability systems—so a crook hub can cause noises and warning lights, not just a rough ride.
The Prius uses sealed hub-and-bearing units, so there’s no periodic greasing. Instead, inspection is the go. At each service, a tech should check for noise, play, and smooth rotation. Common signs it’s time for replacement include:
- A humming or growling that rises with road speed, often changing when gently weaving left/right.
- Noticeable play at the wheel when rocked at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions.
- ABS or traction control lights, or related fault codes for a wheel speed signal.
- Uneven tyre wear or heat at the hub after a drive.
When replacement’s needed, the smart move is to fit an OE or high-quality hub assembly with the correct ABS encoder specification. Up front, the job involves removing the calliper and rotor, disconnecting the wheel speed sensor lead, and unbolting the hub from the knuckle
