2022 Toyota Prius temperature sensors
According to Toyota’s New Car Features (NCF) and the Toyota Repair Manual for the ZVW50/51 series, the 2022 Toyota Prius is fitted with multiple temperature sensors across the engine, hybrid system and climate control. These are core to the Prius’ engine management, emissions, battery protection and cabin comfort, so temperature sensors are very much relevant to this model.
On this Prius, temperature sensors help the ECUs decide fuel delivery and ignition on cold starts, command cooling fans and pumps, protect the high-voltage battery and inverter, and keep the cabin comfy. The presence of engine coolant temperature (ECT) and intake air temperature (IAT) is also reflected in standard OBD‑II PIDs and related DTCs (e.g., ECT/IAT circuit faults), which Toyota documents in the service literature.
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor: Feeds the engine ECU for cold-start enrichment, fan control and overheat protection.
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor: Typically integrated into the MAF, guiding spark and fuel trims.
- HV battery temperature sensors: Multiple thermistors monitor pack temps so the hybrid ECU can run the battery cooling blower and protect battery life.
- Inverter/converter coolant temperature sensors: Manage inverter thermal load and pump/fan operation.
- Cabin/ambient thermistors: Let the A/C amplifier deliver stable climate control and accurate outside-temp readings.
