2022 Toyota Prius tail-lights: what they do and how to look after them
Tail-lights are absolutely fitted to the 2022 Toyota Prius. Technical references such as the Toyota 2022 Prius Owner’s Manual (Lighting), the Toyota Repair Manual/TIS for the ZVW50-series rear combination lamp, and regulatory standards (ADR 13/00 and UNECE Regulations R7/R48 for lamp performance/installation, plus the NZ Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004) all specify rear position lamps as mandatory. The Prius leaves the factory with integrated rear combination lamps that include tail, brake, indicator and reverse functions.
On the 2022 Prius, the tail-light’s main job is to make the car clearly visible from behind, especially at night and in wet or foggy conditions. The red rear position light runs whenever the headlights or park lights are on, while brighter brake LEDs kick in under braking to warn following traffic. Indicators and reverse lights share the same rear clusters. Most 2022 Prius models use LEDs for tail and stop functions, giving crisp illumination, quick response and low current draw.
While LEDs typically last a long time, rear lamps still deserve a spot on the service checklist. Lenses can haze, seals can age, connectors can loosen, and bulbs for indicators or reverse (if not LED on your trim) do eventually wear out. It’s smart to check tail-light operation at every service, before long trips, and ahead of rego/WOF inspections. Keep the lenses clean with car-safe wash products—no harsh solvents—and inspect for cracks or moisture after heavy rain or car washes.
- Do a quick walk-around with lights on: tail, brake (with a helper), indicators and reverse.
- If a tail or stop LED section is out, the fix is usually replacing the rear lamp assembly.
- For globe-type indicators/reverse, replace like-for-like ADR/NZ-compliant bulbs
