2022 Toyota Prius clutch-kit: is it relevant?

A clutch-kit isn’t used on the 2022 Toyota Prius. This model runs Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive with an e‑CVT hybrid transaxle (P610 series), which doesn’t need a conventional friction clutch, pressure plate or release bearing. Toyota’s New Car Features manual for the XW50-series Prius and the Owner’s Manual both describe an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and a power‑split device, not a manual gearbox. Toyota’s repair literature (TIS/RM) and widely cited SAE technical papers on Toyota’s hybrid system outline the same layout: a planetary gearset links the petrol engine to two motor‑generators (MG1/MG2), managing power flow without a start-up or shift clutch.

Here’s the gist of why a clutch-kit isn’t part of the car. The power‑split device is a single planetary set: the engine, MG1 and MG2 are connected to different members of the gearset. MG1 controls engine speed and provides “virtual” gear ratios, while MG2 drives the wheels. Because the hybrid system can launch the car electrically and synchronise engine engagement via MG1, there’s no need for a friction clutch or a torque converter. There’s also no manual shift action that would require a clutch pack. Some hybrids from other brands use dual‑clutch or start‑clutch arrangements
