2022 Subaru Impreza brake fluid — what it does and how to look after it

Brake fluid is absolutely relevant to the 2022 Subaru Impreza. The model runs a conventional hydraulic brake system with ABS and Vehicle Dynamics Control, and the factory literature specifies glycol-based DOT 3 (DOT 4 also acceptable). This is documented in the 2022 Subaru Impreza Owner’s Manual and reflected in Subaru Australia/New Zealand servicing guides that include periodic brake fluid replacement.

In the Impreza, brake fluid transfers the force from the brake pedal to the callipers via the master cylinder, lines and ABS/ESC modulator. Because it’s hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture over time), its boiling point drops as it ages. That can lead to a longer, softer pedal, corrosion inside precision valves in the ABS unit, and reduced stopping performance on long downhill runs or during repeated hard stops.

For Aussie and Kiwi conditions, most Subaru dealer schedules recommend replacing the brake fluid about every 24 months regardless of kilometres, with inspections at regular services. Subaru technical material for similar platforms also permits DOT 4, which offers a higher dry/wet boiling point than DOT 3
