2022 Mazda 3 thrust-bearing — what it is and how to look after it
Based on the Mazda BP Mazda3 Workshop Manual (engine section covering crankshaft/main bearings and end play) and the Mazda Genuine Parts Catalogue for the BP series, the 2022 Mazda 3 does use a thrust-bearing function. It’s built into the engine’s main bearing set to control crankshaft end float. Mazda’s clutch documentation also shows that on manual models the part commonly called a “thrust bearing” by some is officially the clutch release bearing, which is a separate item in the clutch assembly. So yes, a thrust-bearing is relevant to the 2022 Mazda 3 — it’s inside the engine, and it isn’t a routine service item.
What does it do? The crankshaft thrust-bearing keeps the crank centred front-to-back, managing axial loads from the clutch (manual), the torque converter and accessory drive (auto), and general drivetrain forces. By holding axial movement within spec, it protects the crank, bearings, and transmission from wear and odd noises, and helps keep engine timing and sensor targets exactly where they should be.
Maintenance-wise, there’s no scheduled replacement. It’s lubricated by engine oil and is only inspected or renewed during engine repair or overhaul. Still, a bit of care goes a long way. Using the correct oil grade, sticking to service intervals, and avoiding clutch abuse (like riding the pedal) help prevent excess axial load. On manual cars, replacing the clutch release bearing when doing a clutch kit is smart — it’s a different part to the engine’s thrust-bearing, but looking after the clutch system reduces the push on the crank’s thrust faces.
When is attention needed? A technician will check crank end float if there are symptoms or the bottom end is open:
- Notable fore–aft movement in the crank pulley or flywheel when the clutch is pressed (manual) or when loading/unloading the engine
- Metallic rubbing noises at idle that change with clutch action
- Unusual wear particles in the oil or oil filter inspections
If the engine is apart, they’ll measure end play with a dial indicator and compare to the Mazda spec in the workshop manual. Replacement involves selecting the correct-grade main bearings with integrated thrust faces, checking crank journal condition, using proper assembly lube, and torquing caps to spec. For most owners, the best “maintenance” is clean oil, sensible driving, and timely clutch service on manuals.
- Is the thrust-bearing a regular service item on a 2022 Mazda 3?
Not in normal servicing. It’s part of the engine’s main bearing set and only checked or replaced during engine repair. Routine oil changes and avoiding clutch abuse help it live a long life. - Is the clutch release bearing the same as a thrust-bearing?
No. On manual Mazda 3 models, the release (throwout) bearing is part of the clutch system and is serviced with a clutch kit. The engine thrust-bearing lives in the bottom end and controls crankshaft end float. - What signs suggest thrust-bearing wear?
Look for fore–aft crank movement when the clutch is pressed, changing noises at idle with clutch action, or metallic debris in oil inspections. A mechanic will confirm by measuring crank end play against the workshop manual spec.
