2022 Ford Fiesta manifold gasket — what it is and when it matters

Based on Ford’s Workshop Manual for the Fiesta Mk8.5 (Section 303-01, intake system) and the Ford parts catalogue (ETIS/Microcat), the 2022 Ford Fiesta does use a manifold gasket — specifically an intake manifold gasket/seal. Both the 1.0L EcoBoost and 1.5L EcoBoost (ST) engines employ an integrated exhaust manifold within the cylinder head, as described in Ford technical briefs for the EcoBoost “Fox” and “Dragon” engines. That design means there isn’t a traditional separate exhaust manifold gasket, instead, there are sealing interfaces for the turbocharger and downpipe. So while a classic exhaust-manifold gasket isn’t fitted, the intake manifold gasket is absolutely relevant on the 2022 Fiesta.

For the 2022 Fiesta, the intake manifold gasket’s whole job is to keep the engine breathing properly. It seals the plastic intake manifold to the alloy cylinder head so only metered, filtered air gets in. On turbo variants, it also has to hold boost pressure without letting a whisper of air leak under the bonnet. Most versions use moulded rubber O-ring style seals, chosen for stability through heat cycles and resistance to modern petrol blends.

When that seal starts to harden or get nicked, the engine can run lean, idle roughly, or chuck a check-engine light. Common signs include:

  • Hissing or whistling under load or boost
  • Rough idle, hesitation, or higher-than-normal fuel use
  • Lean mixture fault codes (for example P0171) and short/long-term fuel trims out of whack

As part of servicing, the intake manifold gasket isn’t a routine replacement item by kilometres, it’s a “replace on disturbance” part. Any time the manifold comes off — for decarbon work, injector access, or an intake clean — it’s smart to install a fresh OEM-quality gasket. Reusing a compressed seal is false economy.

Good workshop practice on the Fiesta includes cleaning mating faces without gouging, fitting the gasket dry unless Ford explicitly calls for a sealant, and torquing the manifold fasteners in the correct sequence to spec. While in there, it’s worth checking PCV hoses, vacuum lines, and the throttle body O-ring, as small air leaks can masquerade as a gasket fault. After replacement, clear any stored codes and confirm trims and idle are stable on a quick road test.

Owners of the Fiesta ST 1.5 will find the advice the same: no separate exhaust-manifold gasket due to the integrated head manifold, but the intake manifold gasket remains a critical seal for smooth running and proper boost control. Keep it healthy and the little EcoBoost will stay perky and efficient.

Does the 2022 Fiesta have an exhaust manifold gasket?

No. On the 1.0L and 1.5L EcoBoost engines, the exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head. That eliminates the traditional exhaust manifold and its flat gasket. Instead, sealing occurs at the turbo-to-head and turbo-to-downpipe joints, which use their own specific gaskets or rings.

What are the signs the intake manifold gasket is leaking on a 2022 Fiesta?

Expect a rough or high idle, a hiss under boost, increased fuel use, and fault codes for lean running. Fuel trims may drift positive as the ECU chases the unmetered air. You might also notice a faint whistle on cold start that eases off as things warm up.

Should the gasket be replaced whenever the intake manifold is removed?

Yes. Ford service guidance treats the intake manifold gasket as a single-use seal. Once compressed and heat-cycled, it’s best practice to fit a new gasket on reassembly to avoid vacuum or boost leaks and a return visit.
