2021 Volkswagen Amarok head gasket — what it is, what it does, and when to act

Yes, the 2021 Volkswagen Amarok does use a head gasket. Volkswagen’s factory workshop information (ElsaPro/ElsaWin) and the VW parts catalogue (ETKA) list a multi-layer steel cylinder head gasket for both the 3.0 V6 TDI and the 2.0 TDI engines used in the Amarok range. That means the head gasket is absolutely relevant to this ute’s reliability and cooling, oiling, and combustion sealing.

The head gasket’s job is pretty simple to describe but critical to get right. It seals the mating surface between the cylinder head and the engine block, keeping three things from mixing where they shouldn’t: high-pressure combustion gases, coolant, and engine oil. On the Amarok’s diesel engines, the gasket is a multi-layer steel (MLS) design engineered to handle high cylinder pressures, thermal cycles, and the clamping force from torque-to-yield head bolts.

It’s not a scheduled service item, so there’s no routine “head gasket replacement” in the logbook. Instead, smart upkeep under the bonnet helps the gasket live a long life:

  • Stick to the correct VW-approved coolant (G12/G13 family) and change it on time.
  • Keep the cooling system healthy: radiator clean, hoses sound, thermostat and fans working, no leaks.
  • Avoid overheating — pull over if temperatures climb
