2021 Toyota Land Cruiser head gasket: what it does and when to sort it

Based on Toyota’s own technical literature — the Land Cruiser 200 Series Repair Manual (engine sections for 3UR-FE petrol and 1VD-FTV diesel) and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue — the 2021 Land Cruiser absolutely uses a cylinder head gasket. Both engines are conventional V8s with aluminium cylinder heads bolted to a cast-iron block (1VD-FTV) or aluminium block (3UR-FE), sealed by a multi-layer steel (MLS) head gasket. So yes, the head-gasket is relevant and fitted from factory.

On a 2021 Land Cruiser, the head gasket sits between the block and each cylinder head, sealing combustion pressure while keeping coolant and oil in their own passages. The MLS design handles high compression, turbo-diesel boost (on the 1VD-FTV), and big heat swings, which is why Toyota specifies it in the Repair Manual. When it’s healthy, the engine runs cool, clean, and strong.
