2021 Toyota Camry fuel cap — purpose, care, and when to replace

For the 2021 Toyota Camry, a conventional screw-on fuel tank cap is fitted from factory. This is confirmed in Toyota’s 2021 Camry Owner’s Manual (fuel tank cap and refuelling instructions) and Toyota service literature covering the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system, where a loose or faulty cap is a common diagnostic check. The Camry does not use a capless filler arrangement.

On this model, the fuel cap does more than just cover the filler neck. It seals the tank to stop petrol vapour escaping, protects the EVAP system’s pressure/vacuum integrity, and keeps dust, water, and road grime out of the fuel system. A good seal also helps prevent fuel odour around the left-rear quarter of the car. When tightened, the cap clicks to indicate it’s properly seated.

As part of regular servicing in Australia and New Zealand (typically every 12 months or 15,000 km, whichever comes first), it’s smart to give the fuel cap a quick once-over. Wipe the filler neck, check the cap’s rubber O-ring for cracks, flattening, or hardening, and make sure the tether isn’t broken. If the cap won’t click, feels loose, or there’s a whiff of petrol after parking, it may be time to replace it.

If a Check Engine light appears soon after refuelling, a loose cap is a usual suspect. Refit the cap and tighten until it clicks several times, then drive normally
