2021 Ford Focus oxygen sensor — what it does and how to look after it
Yes, the 2021 Ford Focus absolutely uses oxygen sensors. Ford’s own Workshop Manual for Focus Mk4 (2019–2022, Section 303-14 Fuel Charging and Controls) specifies a wideband air–fuel ratio (A/F) sensor upstream of the catalytic converter and a heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) downstream. This layout is also reflected in Motorcraft service/parts catalogues and typical OBD-II diagnostics for the model (DTCs such as P0131, P0135, P0136 appear in technical coverage), and sensor application guides from major OE suppliers like Bosch, Denso and NTK.
On the 2021 Focus (including common AU/NZ petrol variants), the upstream wideband sensor constantly reports how rich or lean the burn is so the ECU can trim fuelling on the fly. The downstream sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency, making sure emissions stay within Euro 6 specs. Together they keep fuel economy tidy, throttle response crisp and emissions clean.
While oxygen sensors are “fit and forget” for many years, they are wear items. Age, heat cycles, oil or coolant contamination, and silicone or lead exposure slowly dull their accuracy. As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to:
- Scan for fault codes and check live fuel trims, unusual STFT/LTFT values can flag a lazy sensor.
- Inspect wiring and connectors for heat damage or chafing.
- Fix any exhaust leaks ahead of the sensor — they skew readings.
Typical symptoms of a tired sensor include poorer fuel economy, a rough idle, sluggish performance, an exhaust sulphur smell, or a glowing MIL. If those pop up and other causes are ruled out, replacement is the go. There’s no cleaning that genuinely restores a sensor, once the element is contaminated or slow, it’s done.
Replacement tips: use quality OE-spec parts (Bosch, Denso, NTK or genuine Motorcraft) matched to the engine code. Many 2021 Focus petrol variants have two sensors (Bank 1 Sensor 1 pre-cat, Bank 1 Sensor 2 post-cat). Warm the exhaust slightly to ease removal, use an O2 sensor socket, don’t twist the loom, and torque to the Ford spec. Most new sensors come pre-coated on the threads — if not, apply a tiny amount of O2-safe anti-seize, keeping it off the tip. Clear any codes and verify trims and readiness monitors on a short drive. As a rough guide, have sensors checked around 100,000 km and consider proactive replacement between 160,000–200,000 km if performance or economy is drifting.
How many oxygen sensors does a 2021 Ford Focus have?
Most AU/NZ petrol models run two: a wideband A/F sensor before the cat and a heated O2 sensor after it (both on Bank 1). High-performance variants like the ST also use two. Some diesel configurations may include additional sensing depending on the emissions package fitted.
What are the signs an oxygen sensor is failing on a 2021 Focus?
Owners often notice worse fuel economy, a check engine light, rough idle, flat spots on acceleration or a whiff of sulphur from the exhaust. A scan tool may show slow sensor response or unusual fuel trims. Rule out vacuum or exhaust leaks first, then replace the sensor if it’s out of spec.
Can an oxygen sensor be cleaned, or should it just be replaced?
It should be replaced. Solvents or “cleaning” won’t restore a contaminated element and can wreck the sensor. Fit a correct-spec replacement, clear fault codes and confirm trims and readiness — no special coding is usually required on the Focus, as the ECU relearns quickly.
