2020 Toyota Hilux wheel bearings — what they do and when to service them
Wheel bearings are absolutely fitted to the 2020 Toyota Hilux. Technical sources including the Toyota Repair Manual for Hilux (AN120/AN130) front and rear axle sections, Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue (which lists the front hub sub‑assembly with integrated bearing and the rear axle shaft bearing and oil seal), and major bearing catalogues from OE suppliers (e.g., Koyo/NSK/Timken) all specify wheel bearings for this model. The front end uses a sealed, unitised hub bearing, while the rear (solid axle) uses pressed-on tapered roller bearings with retainers and axle oil seals.
On a Hilux, wheel bearings keep the ute’s wheels spinning smoothly while carrying the vehicle’s weight and dealing with cornering and braking loads. They reduce friction, help maintain precise wheel alignment, and on the front, the hub assembly typically integrates the ABS tone ring for accurate wheel speed data.
Front: the sealed hub unit isn’t serviceable for grease, when worn or noisy it’s replaced as a complete assembly. Rear: the tapered roller bearing is pressed onto the axle shaft with a retainer and runs behind an axle oil seal. Replacement requires a press and correct tooling, the retainer and oil seal are renewed during the job.
There’s no fixed replacement interval. Instead, have the wheel bearings checked at regular servicing (every 10,000–15,000 km is a good rhythm in AU/NZ), and sooner if the vehicle tows, carries heavy loads, runs larger tyres, or does water crossings and beach work.
- Signs it’s time: a humming or growling that rises with speed, play felt at the wheel, heat at the hub after a drive, ABS/traction faults, or uneven/feathered tyre wear.
- Good practice: use quality OE-equivalent bearings, always renew seals and retainers on the rear, and follow Toyota torque specs for axle nuts, hub bolts and brake hardware.
- Front hub units are typically swapped side-for-side only as needed, rears are replaced per side with new seal/retainer. After rear work, check diff oil level and road-test for noise.
If noise changes when loading the ute side-to-side in a gentle lane change, that’s a classic bearing clue. Don’t pressure-wash directly at hubs and avoid prolonged hot-to-cold water dunking after off‑road use. A tidy bearing now saves hub, axle and ABS components later.
- Does the 2020 Hilux have serviceable bearings or sealed units?
The front uses sealed hub units (replace the assembly when worn), while the rear uses pressed-on tapered roller bearings with a separate axle oil seal. The rear isn’t “grease-and-go”, it’s a remove-and-press job with new retainer and seal. - How long do Hilux wheel bearings last?
Many run 100,000–200,000 km or more in normal use. Heavy towing, larger tyres, corrugations, mud, and water crossings can shorten that. Inspect at each service and replace at the first sign of noise or play. - Is it safe to drive with a noisy wheel bearing?
Not really. Continued driving can damage the hub/axle, upset ABS readings, and in the worst case lead to wheel/hub failure. Get it checked promptly.
