2020 Toyota Hilux Driveshafts

Driveshafts are absolutely used on the 2020 Toyota Hilux. Technical sources including the Toyota Hilux (N80 series, 2015–2020) Repair Manual sections “Propeller Shaft Assembly” and “Front Drive Shaft,” plus the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) listings for GUN126R/GGN125 variants, specify a rear propeller shaft for 4x2 and 4x4 models, and additional front CV drive shafts for 4WD. These documents confirm the Hilux runs a tailshaft between the transmission/transfer case and rear differential, and, on 4x4, left and right front axle shafts with CV joints.

On a 2020 Hilux, the driveshafts do the heavy lifting of getting torque from the gearbox to the diffs and out to the wheels. The rear propeller shaft (tailshaft) handles rear drive, while 4x4 models add front CV shafts to transmit drive to the front hubs. They’re designed to cope with angle changes from suspension travel, towing loads, and the stop-start of daily use—typical ute life in Australia and New Zealand.

As part of servicing, it’s smart to keep an eye on the uni joints, slip joint, centre bearing (where fitted), and CV boots. Some Hilux variants have greasable uni joints and a slip yoke nipple
