2020 Nissan Serena heater hose — what it does and how to look after it
On the 2020 Nissan Serena (C27), the heater hose is absolutely fitted and relevant. Technical references that confirm this include the Nissan Serena C27 Service Manual (Section HA: Heater & Air Conditioning — Heater Piping), which shows the heater water hoses running to the heater core at the firewall, and the Nissan Electronic Parts Catalogue (C27 FAST/EPC), which lists the inlet and outlet “Heater Water Hose” for both the MR20DD 2.0 S-HYBRID and the HR12DE e-POWER variants. The e-POWER service documentation also notes a PTC electric heater assist alongside the conventional coolant-fed heater core, which still relies on heater hoses.
The heater hose’s job is simple but vital: it carries hot engine coolant from the engine to the heater core inside the dash, and returns it after it’s given up heat for cabin warmth and demisting. Even on the e-POWER Serena, where the petrol engine runs mainly as a generator, coolant still circulates to the heater core via these hoses, with the PTC element chipping in on cold starts.
As part of regular servicing in Australia and New Zealand, it’s smart to:
- Inspect hoses every service (around 10,000–15,000 km). Look for cracking, perishing, soft spots, swelling near clamps, oil contamination, or white crusty deposits.
- Check for coolant smells, misted windows, or damp carpet near the firewall — all can hint at hose or connection issues.
- Confirm clamps are tight and not chewing into the rubber. Replace tired spring clamps with quality constant-tension or OE-spec clamps.
- Use the correct coolant: Nissan Genuine Long Life Coolant (Blue). Don’t mix types or colours, and top up with the same premix or the correct demineralised-water blend if using concentrate.
Replacement is usually condition-based, but many workshops recommend doing heater hoses around the 8–10 year mark, or earlier if there are any signs of ageing. Replace hoses in pairs, fit new clamps, and bleed the cooling system properly. On the Serena C27, set the climate to HOT, open any air-bleed points, park nose-up if possible, and run the engine while topping up to purge air. With e-POWER, follow the manufacturer’s bleed procedure as the engine may start/stop automatically
