2020 Nissan Pathfinder manifold gasket — purpose, service and replacement

Based on the Nissan factory service manual for the R52-series Pathfinder (2017–2020, EM and EX sections) and the Nissan parts catalogue for the VQ35DD engine, the 2020 Nissan Pathfinder is fitted with both intake manifold gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. These gaskets are absolutely relevant to the vehicle’s sealing and performance.

On the 2020 Pathfinder, the intake manifold gaskets seal the junctions between the upper plenum, lower intake runners and the cylinder heads, keeping unmetered air out so the engine management can maintain proper fuel trims. The exhaust manifold gaskets sit between the cylinder heads and the exhaust manifolds, preventing hot gas leaks that can cause noise, fumes in the cabin, oxygen-sensor confusion and heat damage to nearby components.

When these gaskets harden or compress over time, tiny leaks can crop up. Intake leaks tend to show up as rough idle, a whistle, higher fuel use or lean fault codes. Exhaust leaks often sound like a ticking on cold start, may leave sooty marks around the flange and can trigger O2 sensor and catalyst-efficiency dramas if ignored.
