2019 Toyota Prius Brake Fluid: What It Does and How to Look After It

Brake fluid is absolutely relevant to the 2019 Toyota Prius. Technical sources including the Toyota Owner’s Manual for the 2019 Prius (ZVW50 series) and Toyota’s Repair Manual (Brake System section) specify a conventional hydraulic system that uses glycol-based brake fluid, with the reservoir cap and Toyota literature calling for DOT 3. Even with regenerative braking doing much of the slowing, the Prius still relies on hydraulic brakes for final stopping power and emergency braking.

On this model, brake fluid transfers pedal effort to the calipers and wheel cylinders through a by-wire controlled, ABS/ESC-equipped hydraulic circuit. It needs to maintain a high boiling point and resist moisture so braking stays strong in repeated stops and in hilly Aussie and Kiwi conditions. When brake fluid absorbs water over time, its boiling point drops, which can lead to a spongy pedal, longer stopping distances, and corrosion inside pricey components like the ABS/actuator assembly and brake booster pump.

For routine care, it’s smart to:

  • Use high-quality DOT 3 fluid as specified by Toyota
