2019 Subaru Impreza clutch kit — is it used or relevant?

Short answer: for Australian and New Zealand new-delivery cars, a clutch kit isn’t used on the 2019 Subaru Impreza. Technical references from Subaru Australia/NZ model specifications list Lineartronic CVT as standard across the MY19 Impreza range, with no manual gearbox option. The Subaru factory service literature for the GK/GT Impreza identifies the TR580 Lineartronic CVT with a torque converter and internal multi-plate elements, not a conventional dry clutch and pressure plate assembly. That means there’s no serviceable “clutch kit” (disc, cover, release bearing) on local-market cars.

Why no clutch kit? A traditional clutch kit belongs to a manual transmission. The 2019 Impreza sold in AU/NZ uses Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT, which launches through a torque converter and varies ratios via a steel belt and pulleys. While the CVT does have internal clutches, they’re part of the transmission assembly and aren’t serviced as a separate clutch kit. Subaru parts catalogues for AU/NZ VINs won’t show a clutch disc or pressure plate for this model year.

Owners sometimes search for a “clutch kit” when they’re really chasing smoother take-off or shift feel. On a 2019 Impreza CVT, the right approach is CVT care and driveline checks rather than a clutch replacement. Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and Subaru service information: have the CVT fluid inspected at the prescribed intervals and replaced if operating under severe conditions (frequent stop–start, towing, steep terrain, high ambient heat), and keep software updates current where applicable.

There is one exception worth noting: in some overseas markets the 2019 Impreza was available with a 5‑speed manual, which does use a conventional clutch kit. If a vehicle in Australia or New Zealand is a private/grey import manual, then a clutch kit is relevant for that specific car. For locally delivered models, a manual clutch kit won’t be compatible.

  • What to service instead of a clutch: CVT fluid condition, driveline mounts, front CV joints/axles, and engine/gearbox software updates.
  • Watch for: shudder on take-off, delayed engagement, whining or overheating warnings — get a specialist to scan and road-test early.
  • Use only Subaru-specified CVT fluid and correct procedures
